The Virtual Library: Making Interactive Online Tours with 360° Images, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality Technologies
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
The Montana State University Library created an interactive, virtual tour of our library and its resources, services, and partner spaces using a combination of Google Street View, a cell phone, and ThingLink 360° virtual tour software. The virtual tour contains multiple 360° images with clickable augmented reality elements including links to related web pages, video introductions, informational labels, and instant chat with library personnel. This augmented reality tour can be viewed both through through virtual reality or web browser interfaces. This presentation will introduce this tour, show the steps to creating such a tour, and provide examples of other potential applications for these technologies such as use in libraries, archives, museums, and cultural heritage institutions. This talk will include information about creating text and audio scripts to accompany the 360° virtual tour for visually impaired accessibility. Our tour is used in conjunction with an in-person open house and is also used in library instruction sessions, in campus orientations, and for student recruitment. The clickable elements bring spaces to life online. This will be a fun opportunity to see how a combination of interactive 360° images, augmented reality, and virtual reality can help organizations connect with their community in new ways!
