OVERVIEW

Our primary focus in our webinars, articles, podcasts, and interview is on helping you build, improve, and work in a safe library environment.

In this special webinar, we’ll provide 20 tips, techniques, and ideas that you can use immediately to keep yourself, your facility, and/or your library staff safe at every level. They will work to help you or your staff to feel empowered, productive, assertive, and connected to your facility and the important service work you do on behalf of your patrons.

LEARNING AGENDA:

  • Using staff meeting discussions to address frequent patron behavioral problems.
  • Using Charles Duhigg’s three-part “Supercommunicators” model.
  • Training, coaching, and modeling the best service, safety, and security approaches for new employees, part-timers, and volunteers.
  • Using the “Essential Eight” to operationalize our Code of Conduct; moving from abstract concepts to concrete actions.
  • The value of body language as your first communication assessment tool.
  • The useful role of an employee-led Safety Committee.
  • Expanding our offered/outside-the-box resources for patrons experiencing homelessness, mentally health, or substance use issues.
  • The three elements of employee self-care: Do I feel physically safe, mentally safe, emotionally safe.
