Training BSC Students to be Information Literate in the Online Library Environment
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bryant & Stratton College Cleveland and Solon, Ohio, campus libraries identified a need to train students quickly and efficiently to both navigate virtual library resources and locate and use virtual information packages while studying remotely. Since delivery of bibliographic instruction was no longer possible via in-person class visits, a structured virtual bibliographic instruction session was constructed to be delivered during virtual class visits via Skype for Business. This presentation will discuss the sequence of steps that are presented to students to familiarize them with the Bryant & Stratton College Virtual Library and the skills they will need to use a variety of academic information resources. Namely, the presentation will discuss how students are introduced to the navigation of the library guides for each major and how to initiate a chat session with a reference librarian from any page on the BSC library site. The presentation will then discuss how students are introduced to cloud computing and how to access and make use of their personal cloud drive and virtual productivity software to create and store assignments. The presentation will then discuss how students are introduced to the library catalog and the EBSCO Discovery Service, and specifically how to use these interfaces to conduct a subject search for relevant information resources. The presentation will also discuss how students are trained to recognize the uses of traditional reference resources, and how to access the library’s virtual reference collection. Finally, the presentation will review the practice assignment that students are given at the end of the session to develop skills of library site navigation, subject searching, and document analysis.
