I value the ability to create change in the world. Both my life and work decisions revolve around that core value. This is Library 2.0. We're all in a classic caring profession. Most of us want to help people and make a difference in our communities. We encourage young people to follow in our footsteps to be changemangers and do good in the world. But changing the world is hard and can have a dark side. Changing policies, processes, human behavior, faulty thought processes, beliefs, and a multitude of other little things that add up to great things is not easy. Change is slow and can feel like running full-speed into a brick wall twenty different ways, chipping away small pieces until the wall comes down. In pieces. On your head.
This session is about telling the truth to current and fledgling changemakers. It is possible to give too much of yourself. You can't help others until you help yourself. If you value changing the world, value yourself. Value your mental health and wellbeing. It's okay to say no to some things. It's okay to put yourself first. Come to this session to hear how I learned the hard way to be kind to myself. Walk away with a few simple, occasionally zany, tips and techniques to stay healthy and sane while creating positive change. Remind yourself to be realistic about how change works. Then pass it along to the future changemakers in your life.
