About Me:
Currently I am employed as a Circulation Assistant at Ela Area Public Library and as a Page at the Barrington Public Library in Lake County, Illinois. My goals are to complete my education to advance my career further as a public library professional. I desire to serve the library's community as both an advocate and ambassador. This role will allow me to take the necessary action to close the gap while creating a physical, in-person social networking headquarters tailored to each community's specific needs and interests. As a front line employee, I'm privileged to serve our patrons first-hand and use these interactions to find out their thoughts and suggestions as it pertains to the library. In my role as a Page, I am able to identify needs and trends and interest level on many levels such as genres, authors and technology. I stay informed through the returned items and the number of copies we own. It's fun to connect the news and media stories that seem to relate directly to what topics are suddenly seeing an increase in circulation. It's also my belief that stereotypes of the public libraries of yesteryear are believed by many to be as true today as back then. Just watch any sitcom with a library scene ("Married With Children" has a good one), and you'll see even the tv show's writers aren't informed on today's "modern" libraries. "No, Mr. TV Show Script Writer, public libraries DO NOT exist in an alternate universe from 1955. " Our libraries are such great institutions offering invaluable resources and ideal settings for social or educational gatherings. Public libraries are slowly becoming the "new" town hall but with major premium upgrades. I want to help it continue in that direction and wishing it does won't make it happen. Only through active participation can growth be expected no matter how big or small or small one's role is.
