Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Hello, My Name is Charlene Saint-Jean. I am a media specialist at Cherokee Lane Elementary School. Over the last 10 years, I have grown in my ability to connect with my students and the teachers within the school library.
In my session, I would like to share about my approach to promoting Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

First off it is my understanding that it is MY Responsibility as the SCHOOL LIBRARIAN...MEDIA SPECIALIST to create belonging and connection within my school.

I use Social Emotional Learning strategies, Computational Thinking Activities, and Reading books to bring about a cohesive school library experience.

The school year begins with THE WHY. I inform my students and the teachers WHY I am here, and why I have chosen to serve at Cherokee Lane Elementary School. Not just teach but SERVE. I believe in the uniqueness of each individual student and teacher. So my joy is to demonstrate that YOU matter.

Once I establish that...I introduce the CT strategies integrated into my Reading lessons. I speak with teachers to see what they are doing in their classrooms in connection to Reading and I echo that in my lessons. I use Reading books to connect academic subjects and monthly celebrations to promote diversity within our school.

It is a satisfying life I have. Daily I get to share my life with beautiful human beings who enjoy participating, sharing, reading, learning from one another, and having fun.
