Short Session Description: Libraries can serve as hubs for inclusive AI discourse by fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, hosting literacy initiatives, and bridging the gap between technology and public understanding.

Full Session Description:

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to shape research, education, and daily life, libraries are uniquely positioned to serve as facilitators of inclusive and informed discourse on its implications. This presentation will explore strategies for libraries to act as community hubs for AI discussions, ensuring equitable access to knowledge while maximizing the benefits of AI for diverse stakeholders.

We will showcase successful collaborations with campus partners, including Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies and the Office of the Vice President (Research and Innovation) at the University of Alberta, to foster interdisciplinary engagement. These partnerships have enabled libraries to support critical conversations on AI ethics, applications, and policies by co-hosting workshops that support the campus community.

Attendees will gain insights into practical approaches for libraries to host AI literacy initiatives, engage with community concerns, and provide a space for deliberative dialogue. By leveraging the role of libraries as trusted knowledge institutions, we can bridge the gap between technological advancement and public understanding, ultimately empowering communities to navigate AI’s opportunities and challenges responsibly.
