---
Full Session Description:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents both opportunities and challenges for libraries as they aim to serve their communities ethically and responsibly. As AI tools become more integrated into library systems—ranging from search algorithms to AI-generated content—libraries must address questions of transparency, bias, and accountability while fostering AI literacy among staff and patrons.
In this session, we will explore how libraries can:
Transparency and Accountability in AI Tools
- Challenges of opaque “black box” algorithms in library services.
- Strategies for demanding transparency and ethical use from vendors and oversight groups.
Addressing Bias and Ethical Risks
- How biases in AI systems (e.g., search tools) can marginalize communities or reinforce inequities.
- Practical approaches to identifying, mitigating, and advocating against these biases.
The Library’s Role in Ethical AI Integration
- Developing policies to guide responsible AI adoption.
- Ensuring that AI aligns with libraries’ missions of equity, trust, and access.
This session will incorporate real-world and hypothetical case studies, such as search and content production bias, algorithmic failures, and data privacy risks, to illustrate key ethical challenges. Attendees will gain practical insights into navigating these issues while positioning libraries as leaders in promoting ethical and equitable AI use.
Key Takeaways for Attendees:
- How to identify ethical risks and biases in AI tools used by libraries.
- Steps for advocating transparency and accountability in AI systems.
- Guidance on integrating responsible AI practices into library policies.
