Short Session Description (one line): Building Critical Components in AI Literacy Workshops with Data Feminism

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): The Texas Tech University Libraries have been engaged with AI workshops since Spring 2022. Since that time, the workshops have expanded into various topics related to AI and generative AI. However, each semester we start with an Overview and Critical Examination, in order to give everyone a basis for understanding the concepts of data feminism, technochauvinism, technoableism, and the New Jim Code. We build from these concepts into other workshops in the series, which has different topics every semester. For Fall 2024, we held workshops on the following: Evaluating and Detecting AI, AI and Democracy, AI and Misinformation, AI and “responsible tech”. The Spring 2025 Semester will have 4 workshops related to AI Literacy, including a new session called AI in Databases and Search Engines.

Data feminism provides a framework in which discussions around biases and power dynamics within the AI landscape are allowed to flourish and who benefits from the misuse of AI. Parts of the discussions have also focused on what “good” generative AI can provide, as researchers are eager to explore how it could help them save time in their research processes. With help from other librarians in the RIO department, the workshops have been successful in leading the campus through discussions on generative AI and its impacts across campus and the research taking place here.

These discussions have been built into the workshops, and allow for faculty, staff and students to express their views regarding AI and the changing academic landscape. This is an ongoing project from the TTUL.
