Full Session Description:
As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools become increasingly integrated into research, learning, and library services, fostering GenAI literacy in higher education is essential for librarians and their users alike. Our project takes a structured approach to this challenge by aligning GenAI competencies with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, equipping instruction librarians with strategies to support their colleagues and students in critically engaging with AI tools.
To draft these ACRL Framework-centered GenAI competencies, we surveyed the rapidly expanding literature on AI literacy, identifying key sources that define relevant skill sets to be targeted by librarians/educators. We then systematically mapped these competencies to the Framework, creating a detailed crosswalk that contextualizes GenAI literacy within established information literacy principles. Leveraging ChatGPT-4o, we applied advanced prompting techniques to iteratively synthesize and refine these mappings, reviewing each Frame to ensure accuracy and coherence. This AI-assisted process yielded an initial draft, which we rigorously fact-checked, edited, and consolidated to eliminate redundancy while maintaining essential overlaps in areas such as ethics and prompt engineering.
This presentation will outline our methodology, present the finalized competency mappings, and discuss our plans for a "train-the-trainer" initiative to prepare instruction librarians for effective implementation. By empowering librarians to integrate GenAI literacy into their teaching, we aim to equip students with the critical skills necessary to navigate and engage with GenAI tools thoughtfully and ethically in both academic and professional contexts.
