Short Session Description (one line): We will present a course outline and sample activities for a 3-credit course we developed on generative AI and information literacy.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
During Fall 2023, we developed an undergraduate course to explore how generative artificial intelligence changes how we find, evaluate, value, and use information. Designed as a collaborative learning experience, we approach artificial intelligence not as definitive experts, but as co-learners, inviting both students and instructors to contribute to and shape new understanding throughout the 8-week course. Each module was designed to highlight a specific Frame from the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. This course investigates the ways in which generative AI muddles our understanding of information production, compounding the already challenging task of source evaluation. We also explore how AI impacts the value of information, including challenges to copyright and fair use. We think a credit course is an excellent vehicle for encouraging students to engage deeply with these issues over time. We also want to acknowledge the discomfort of uncertainty surrounding this relatively new technology by embracing an approach that fosters an environment of exploration, group discussion, and reflection. While this course has not yet been offered, we will share our course organization, some of the activities we’ve planned, and some of the areas we are still struggling with.
