Navigating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in K-12 Education through a Librarian's Lens

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Are you unprepared to approach artificial intelligence in your school library? Do you feel a bit overwhelmed by its quick advancements? Are you ready to increase your knowledge on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including its capabilities of helping to provide personalized learning and foster creativity? AI is an emerging technology that will impact all of us more than we can even currently realize. It's becoming increasingly important for students to be taught how to learn alongside AI and harness its powers. As librarians we can be prepared for this challenge and guide them in their AI journey. AI will not only enable students to become more informed and become responsible users of technology, but also more effective creators of technology content. Librarians will learn about the barriers students may face that can be removed via the usage of AI. It is more important than ever that students need to learn to be flexible, be critical thinkers, and know how to transfer skills to various career fields as AI becomes integrated into just about every career path.

This session aims to provide librarians with the background on the emergence of AI and provide an explanation for what AI is for those with no or limited prior knowledge. Librarians in this session will engage in meaningful dialogue and learn from other librarians who are paving the way to support educators in their schools in using AI technology that advances lifelong learning while meeting the diverse learning, cultural, and social-emotional needs of individual students. Participants will also explore various trending AI tools following a demonstration, and they will leave with a toolkit to utilize upon their return to their school libraries.
