Short Session Description (one line):  Artificial Intelligence for Scholarly Literature Searching: Magic Bullet Or Missing the Mark??

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

This session will  explore the potential for Artificial Intelligence methods to transform scholarly literature searching.  But it will consider that shortcoming of current AI search tools,  as well as the barriers that will need to be overcome for AI scholarly literature search to reach its potential.

We will consider the ability to AI to improve search recall and precision.  The session will explore AI’s perceived ability to identify the underlying concepts researchers are seeking, and improve the speed and efficiency of scholarly literature research. We will also address Important concerns about availability, quality scholarly literature metadata needed to optimize AI searching.

The session will consider some of the benefits and the shortcomings of AI search methods compared to keyword search methods. We will discuss concerns about AI mediated “black box” search processes which may give researchers less understanding of the search processes, and  bodies of literature they are searching.  This is at a time when a growing focus on systematic evidence-based research is requiring researchers to have a greater understanding their literature and search process.
